Alan Boyce '84

After graduating from Pomona, Alan worked for two years as an economist
for the Board of Governors of the Fed. He then got an MBA at Stanford.
During the Stanford years he interned for two years at Solomon Brothers.
After Stanford he began working as a trader for Bankers Trust until the
announcement of its merger with Deutsche Bank. At that time he moved to
George Soros, which manages the largest hedge fund in the world. In
addition to his work as a portfolio manager, under the aegis of George
Soros Alan has been involved in assignments with the governments of
Argentina and Mexico.
David Cho '00

David graduated from Pomona with a major in economics, and then went to
work as a consultant with Bain & Company. He has risen through the ranks
at Bain, working mainly out of its Los Angeles office. He also spent a
year in Bain’s offices in Singapore and Hong Kong. David has completed a
wide range of projects including assignments in semiconductors, IT
services, transportation, telecommunications, and computer
manufacturing. At Pomona College he was for three years captain of the
golf team, and he still combines golf with passions for travel and
football.
Kent Fisher '86

Kent Fisher is a Vice President at Boeing where he has
responsibility for the firm’s understanding of the future of commercial
aviation – where demand for commercial aircraft and services will come
from, what business models, trends and political factors will be most
important, and ultimately where and how passengers and freight of the
future will want to move. His team’s analyses serve as the basis for
forming of Boeing strategy, product decisions, marketing communication,
and sales tactics. He took this position in June 2002. Prior to this,
Kent directed the programs of Boeing’s Air Traffic Management unit, with
broad responsibility for leading the company’s efforts in developing
effective, affordable solutions to increase global air traffic
capacity. Kent previously served as director, Commercial Airplane Group
Sales where he managed several high-visibility accounts, including
American Airlines, Atlas Air, WestJet and Midway Airlines. From 1996 to
1998, he was responsible for assisting Commercial Airplanes customers
with their financing needs as a director in Customer Financing. Before
joining Boeing, Kent held various positions at Price Waterhouse, in its
litigation and bankruptcy-consulting group in Los Angeles and Seattle.
Kent has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Pomona College and a
master’s degree in business administration from the UCLA.
Tim Forest '95

Following graduation from Pomona in economics, Tim worked with McKinsey
& Company as a business analyst in their Los Angeles office. He then
earned his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and returned
to McKinsey in San Francisco for two more years as an associate. While
at McKinsey, Tim worked on strategy projects in the sectors of financial
services, technology, healthcare, and not-for-profit. After leaving
McKinsey in mid-2001, Tim joined Charles Schwab to manage strategy and
operations projects impacting their retail brokerage business, including
400 investment centers. Projects so far have included redesigning the
incentive compensation structure for 1500 retail brokers, analyzing
"best practices" for referrals of retail clients to third-party
financial advisors, and redesigning aspects of Schwab's mass-affluent
client segment offer.
Peter Harding '97

Peter is an Associate at DCM focused on enterprise applications and
wireless software companies. DCM is an early stage venture capital firm
that invests in the communications, networking, wireless, software and
storage systems sectors. Prior to joining DCM, Peter worked as an
Associate for Epoch Partners which was sold to Goldman, Sachs in 2001.
Before Epoch, Peter worked for Merrill Lynch in London as an investment
banking analyst in the Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals group. He began
his career with the Merrill Lynch in Los Angeles working with technology
and healthcare companies on both M&A and convertible financing
transactions. He majored in economics at Pomona College and graduated in
the class of 1997.
Philip B. Hathaway

Since completing his B.A. in economics at Pomona College, Phil has
worked as an analyst for Barrington Associates, a premier M&A investment
bank located in Los Angeles. As this position, Phil supports ongoing
transactions by conducting industry research, preparing financial
models, writing portions of investment memoranda and performing other
analytical work to assist transaction teams. Analysts work directly with
senior firm members and clients throughout an engagement. Phil's
experience includes the sale of WARCO, a rubber manufacturer, to a
private investment group as well as the sale of Keystone RV to Thor
Industries in a $150 million transaction that created the largest
manufacturer of travel trailers and fifth wheels in the country.
Susan V. Helfrey '92

Susan V. Helfrey
is Director of Finance at PayCycle, Inc. in Palo Alto, California.
PayCycle is a leading provider of web-based payroll services for small
businesses. PayCycle started in 1999 with the vision of using the
Internet to provide an easy and low cost way for small businesses
employers to handle their payroll. At PayCycle, Susie is responsible for
all finance functions: planning, analysis, cash management, and
accounting. Prior to joining PayCycle in 2002, Susie worked as VP
Operations for NextMonet, a direct marketer of fine art, where she was
in charge of all customer service and framing operations. Before
NextMonet, she worked with IBM in supply-chain logistics and finance.
Prior to IBM, she worked in the treasury department of Exxon Corporation
and in economic research for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
Susie graduated from Pomona College in 1992 with a concentration in
economics and she holds an MBA from Stanford University.
Victor Liu '88

After graduating from Pomona in 1998, Victor spent two years as a
business analyst at McKinsey & Company. His projects involved different
functions including corporate strategy, mergers & acquisitions, and
private equity due diligence. The different sectors he worked in
included software, entertainment, retail, and private equity. Before
McKinsey and following McKinsey, Victor spent time in Asia as: an intern
with a Pomona alumnus, Bernard Chan in Hong Kong; a Rotary Ambassador in
Taiwan; and as a backpacker in Southeast Asia. This fall he starts up at
Merrill Lynch in its investment banking division as an analyst in the
firm's Westwood, California office.
Dragan Manoev '99

A native of Bulgaria, Dragan has worked in investment banking since his
graduation from Pomona College. While at Lazard, he has participated in
a number of mergers & acquisitions and restructuring assignments for
clients including Microsoft, SBC Communications and others. Dragan
currently focuses on the enterprise software, IT services,
telecommunications/ broadband sectors, and has also completed
transactions in networking equipment (including the sale of VPN
technology vendor Compatible Systems to Cisco).
Erik Nierenberg '97

Erik is a consultant with Bain and Company in Los Angeles. Before that
he was most recently a product manager at Netscape Communications, a web
division of AOL Time Warner. Prior to Netscape, he was a consultant for
Bain and Company in their Los Angeles and San Francisco offices. While
at Bain, Erik advised clients primarily in the technology (broadband and
software) and retail sectors, with a large focus on growth strategy and
customer loyalty. Erik also worked in Bain's Private Equity Group doing
M&A and due diligence in the technology sector. In addition, Erik was
one of the first employees at The Bridgespan Group, which has now grown
to 60 employees with offices in Boston and San Francisco. He graduated
from Pomona College in 1997 and completed his MBA at Stanford University
in 2003.
Fred Studier ’85

Fred has recently begun a new career launching and running FEI Women’s
Health, which is developing worldwide distribution network for paragard,
a gynecological product for women. Prior to that Fred worked for Bain &
Company in a variety of positions and geographies within "the Bain
family." He worked in the San Francisco, Boston and London offices
before helping to found the Los Angeles office in 1996. Fred has did
rotations in private equity at Bain Capital, as Partner of Operations
for Bain's West Coast offices, and ran recruiting, human resources, and
professional development for the LA office. Fred's client experience
ranged across strategy, operational, and organizational issues, as well
as mergers and acquisitions and new business development. He worked on
over 40 engagements for corporate and private equity clients across a
range of industries, including healthcare, telecom and technology,
consumer products, commercial real estate, manufacturing, and travel and
leisure. Fred left Bain for 3 years from 1988 to 1991 to get married,
travel the world, and attend Harvard Business School. Fred graduated
from Pomona College in 1985. His wife Raney is Pomona '86 and they have
two children (Anna, 8 and Greta, 5 - Pomona '17 and '20 respectively).
They live in Manhattan Beach.
Rosemary Surina '00

Since graduating from Pomona College in 2000, Rosemary has worked
for Sibson Consulting, a leading human-capital consulting firm. While at
Sibson, Rosemary has focused on aligning companies' strategic business
goals with their organizational processes and systems. Rosemary has
actively contributed to and managed project teams for several Fortune
500 companies in the high tech, telecommunications, and financial
services industries, developing and implementing custom solutions
relating to organizational effectiveness, performance/talent management,
and compensation design. Rosemary's current projects primarily
concentrate on organization issues in her clients' Sales and Marketing
business units.
